MORE ABOUT THE AREA
The Herault is one of the departments which makes up the Languedoc-Roussillon region of Southern France. It is one of the fastest developing areas of France and is set to rival the French Riviera. The Languedoc is currently the largest wine growing region in France and boasts an amazing average of 300 days of sunshine per year. It has three main types of landscape, the plains (which are prone to flooding) are mostly flat land covered in mile upon mile of vineyard which lead from the coast to the foothills. These are beautiful and covered with forest of Live Oaks, Sweet Chestnuts, Bay, Cherry, Mimosa, and eventually pine trees. This then becomes the mountain ranges or the Haute Languedoc in the North West of the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the Pyrenees in the South West.

EDUCATION

The education system in France is seen as a little old fashioned, it does indeed have old fashioned values, with a much stronger emphasis on discipline than now exists in the UK. But the education your children would get in a French school would far exceed that of its UK equivalent.
In Le Poujol-Sur-Orb the junior school is modern, and adequately equipped. Children can start in the Nursery department (Maternelle), from the age of 2 and then progress into Maternelle Grand Section at 5 and then actual school at 6 years, a class called CP. Once in CP you can expect your child to have plenty of homework! They then progress rapidly and are assessed often. It is normal for any child struggling at the end of a school year to repeat it, this is not at all unusual in France.
The school day begins at 8.30am then most primary school children go home for lunch from 12.00 mid day to 2.00pm although they can stay at school for lunch if you wish. The afternoon session is then from 2.00pm to 4.30pm. School days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. There is no school on a Wednesday, Sunday or Saturday afternoon. There is an excellent before and after school scheme and holiday club which costs a mere fraction of similar schemes in the UK. There are also loads of organised after school and holiday activities. Our 7 year old son loves it here and really enjoys school even though he couldn't speak French when we first arrived.
The school holidays in France are typically longer than in the UK, the summer holiday is 8 weeks long as the weather is often simply too hot to allow for learning.
There is very little allowance made for children with special needs or for children who don’t speak French. You would need to provide additional support for your child if they require it. Most children who come from the UK with little or no French find things very difficult at first, but very quickly pick up French and within a year manage very well. Within two years, they are typically quite fluent.

There are regular busses from the village to Bedarieux, Beziers, Montpellier etc.
The school bus will take children to the Secondary school and the College in Bedarieux from the village and bring them home again at the end of the day.
THE MEDITERRANEAN
The closest beaches are 40 minutes away. There are mile upon mile of sandy beaches, quaint sleepy fishing villages and large tourist resorts along the whole of the coastline. There is typically little surf and the water is shallow for a good distance out and generally safe for children. Many beaches are blue flag standard and do have life guards on duty during the summer. They also have bar’s and café’s on the beach. The resorts along the coast get very busy during the height of summer July and August, but if you stay away from these beaches you can usually find a quite spot, but it won’t have the same facilities as the resorts.

LAKE SALAGOU 20 minutes. Lac du Salagou is a large man made lake, it is the largest lake in the area and is nestled spectacularly amidst an almost alien landscape of extinct volcanoes. There are several water sports centres, campsites, bars and restaurants around the lake, but it is still very easy to find yourself a private spot. Camping “savage” is permitted, but you cannot have any camp fires, park ranger’s drive around the lake during the evening to ensure that this regulation is kept to. There are a large number of huge fish (Carp), in the lake and it is very popular with fishing enthusiasts as well as families. The lake is good for swimming, but be aware that the lava flows make the lake seem very shallow in places, but when you step off them the water is suddenly extremely deep.

TARASSAC 10 minutes. Tarassac is a small village situated just up the road from the house. There is a campsite there with a riverside beach. It is open to the public and there is a café restaurant and toilet facilities on the site. We often go there after school in the spring and early summer and autumn and spend the days there during the school holidays or at weekends.
There are many fish in the river and the water is very clean, coming straight down from the high mountains. There is a rock pool area that is suitable for young children and a rope swing and rocks where older children and adults jump and dive into the very deep water on the far side of the river. It is very popular with local people and we often meet friends from the village there during the summer.

We have enjoyed 2 wonderful years living here and have made many wonderful friends in the village and surrounding area. People are very friendly and helpful and quick to offer assistance.
Sadly our France House is for sale due to a change in family circumstances, but we will be staying in the Herault as we love it here so much.
